Azerbaijan and the World Bank Discuss Preparatory Work for the “Livable Baku” Project

On May 21, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahil Babayev met with a delegation from the World Bank’s “Livable Baku” project team, which was visiting the country. The meeting focused on the main areas of cooperation between the Government of Azerbaijan and the World Bank Group within the framework of the “Livable Baku” project, which is currently at the preparatory stage. The parties also discussed sustainable urban development, environmental resilience and the promotion of green infrastructure in the country and the wider region. Minister Sahil Babayev stated that the partnership with the World Bank plays an important role in supporting Azerbaijan’s socioeconomic development, advancing institutional reforms and developing modern and sustainable infrastructure. It was noted that the “Livable Baku” project is of strategic importance for improving the environmental conditions in Baku, strengthening climate resilience and accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable urban development model. The project is expected to include the modernization of urban infrastructure and public spaces, improvements to solid household waste management, the rehabilitation of contaminated sites and the strengthening of urban governance systems. Emphasizing the importance of implementing the project in phases and on a priority basis, the Minister noted that preparatory work was continuing in close coordination with the World Bank and expressed his appreciation for the support provided. The World Bank delegation highly commended the urban development and climate-oriented reforms being implemented in Azerbaijan and noted that the “Livable Baku” project could become a model initiative in the areas of modern urban development and environmental transformation. The parties also exchanged views on opportunities for cooperation regarding other infrastructure and socially oriented initiatives being implemented in the country, including regional road infrastructure and employment support programs. The parties emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional coordination, enhancing technical preparedness and ensuring long-term sustainability during the subsequent stages of the project.
